Beer is one of the oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic drinks in the world. It is also the third most popular drink overall after water and tea. Beer is brewed from cereal grains—most commonly from malted barley, though wheat, maize (corn), and rice are also used.
The basic idea is to extract the sugars from grains (mostly barley) so that the yeast can turn it into alcohol and CO2, creating beer. The brewing process starts with grains, mostly barley and sometimes wheat, rye or other such things.
In the vast sense, beer is any alcoholic beverage made by the fermentation of grain, just as wine is any alcoholic beverage made by the fermentation of fruit. Majority of the world’s beers, the grain base is barley
The method of making beer includes 5 processes.
- Bottling and aging.
Malting involves harvesting of grains. Heating and drying the grains and finally cracking them. Malting isolate the enzymes needed for brewing.
Mashing involves steeping cracked grains in hot water for about an hour. This process activates the enzymes and results in release of sugar in form of wort. Wort is a sticky sweet liquid.
Boiling invloves heating wort to boiling temperature for an hour and adding hops and spices. Hop is a bitter fruit of vine plant. It shaped like cone and is green in color. It balances the sweetness of wort and also act like a preservative.
Fermentation involves adding yeast to the cooled, strained and filtered wort. After the brewing ends and adding yeast, beer is stored for weeks according to the temperature maintained the storage room. During this process, yeast combines with sugar and release CO2 and at last we get flat beer.
Bottling and Aging involves packing the flat beer in bottles and its either carbonated artificially or store to age with CO2 to get carbonated naturally.
One of the mostly consumed drink involves lots of process and efforts before it reach you.
